Research comparable roles
Start with current job advertisements for similar responsibilities, experience levels and locations. Compare several vacancies rather than treating one advertised figure as the market rate. A management role, an entry-level role and a specialist role can share a title while offering very different work.
Jobs and Skills Australia publishes occupation profiles with employment and earnings information. Use the figures as background: check the data period and coverage, and remember that an occupation-wide median is not a promised salary for a particular vacancy.
Check what the quoted amount includes
Before comparing offers, ask whether the figure is base salary or a total package including superannuation. Clarify the expected hours, employment type and any variable payments. An hourly casual rate and a permanent annual salary need more context before they can be compared fairly.
- Is superannuation additional to the advertised amount or included?
- What hours and roster does the offer cover?
- How are overtime, weekend work and allowances handled?
- Are bonuses guaranteed, discretionary or dependent on targets?
- What training, flexibility or other benefits are included?
Check minimum pay separately
Market salary research does not establish the minimum rate for a job. The applicable award or agreement, duties, classification and employment arrangements can affect pay. Fair Work's Pay and Conditions Tool can help you check award rates, allowances and penalties. Use current information and confirm the correct classification before relying on a calculation.
Prepare for the conversation
Choose a range supported by comparable jobs and your relevant experience. Be ready to explain the responsibilities you can take on and the evidence behind your expectations.
You could say: “Based on the responsibilities and my experience in this area, I am looking for a base salary in this range, plus superannuation. Is that consistent with the budget for the role?” Clarify the package first if the employer uses a different way of quoting pay.
Review the written offer
Ask for the full offer in writing and take time to read it. Compare the role, hours, location, pay and benefits with what you discussed. Raise any difference before accepting.
If a pay term is unclear, ask the employer or recruiter to explain it. For questions about minimum workplace entitlements, use the Fair Work resources linked above. This guide helps you prepare a conversation; it does not provide role-specific salary rates or determine your entitlements.
